Lost and Found
Well after his rollicking 40th birthday playing at the
Great White Festival in Gaansbaai....and then preceding to the Lighthouse Tavern
afterwards,
new Fender endorsee Richard Pryor wakes up the next
morning....... with no fender
He's not sure whether it was the Stroh Rum, the flaming lamborghini, the picasso or the butane induced grapes he was indulging in the night before but he was beyond motherless....... he was fenderless................. and now old.
In panic induced stricken he was all over Gaansbaai looking for his beloved Strat........ But alas the Gaansbaai cupboard was bare.
He'd heard about crime in Gaansbaai......... but that was crime like murder and 'assault with a deadly weapon'........... not guitar stealing. That was unheard of....
This song kept earworming through his brain
I woke up
this morning, My Fender was Gone
I woke up
this morning, My Thirties were Gone
I felt so
bad ................. after all that Stroh Rum
Anyway once he had cleared his head and realized that he
still had 2 more gigs to get through and no guitar...
It was time to lean on an old friend ........ Dale Collins.
Dale who has been a Fender Hillbilly for many years luckily
wasn't in Paris and he answered the call which all contributes to this
Happy Ending.
Quick sidenote here:.... Parys Hillbilly and the Happy Endings will be at the Blues Summit...... Dunno why I thought of that.
Anyway back to the story...
There he was ....Dale answering his phone like he normally does... pressing the green button
and repeating his name with conviction.... "DALE COLLINS".
At that stage Richard knew he had phoned the right number and said "Hello" ............
as if it was just a "how's your Aunty" type call but with a "please can I use your fender " tone
Well after Richard's lengthy explanation of the previous nights loss.......
Dale started to sympathise and soften and put himself in
Rich's shoes and said "Ja Sure you can Borrow my geet"
but quickly backed down after Richard said he would look after it as if it was his own.
Rich's shoes were just not fitting Dale at all...... So a
rephrase was in order........ "Dale I will look after your guitar as if it was
yours"
That was the deal clincher........ A quick Phone call to 'Jenny Jenny' Couriers
and within a few hours Richard met up with Dale's Guitar in
Worcester ready for the 2nd leg of a 3 legged tour.
With all these legs being used up on tour...... Richard didn't have a leg to stand on.
KWV house of Brandy was our next mission........
Ever played in a cave....... well it's similar to playing in a brandy cellar.
You just have to hit the snare drum once and it rings for the rest of the night.
Great turnout and some fine Worcester hospitality from organiser Pieter Swart who booked the band in at the Protea Hotel.
Thanks to Pieter for allowing us to use his Holiday house in Gaansbaai the previous night aswell.
So after some Brandy, 2 small cokes and some Eish we headed off to Gordons Bay
for that 3rd leg of 'EisBein with my little Ein' something that begins with B................ Berties Mooring.
A really cool jam with Ronnie Domp, Willem and Theron Petersen made it a weekend to remember.
Still Monday morning came and Rich was Fenderless in Kirstenhof.
Police were informed and even the army was mobilised to search the Overberg region but still the loss continued.
But eventually after 6 long days, 2 phone calls to Lekota and a heavy discussion with Zuma the guitar turned up in the Sound
Engineers truck
where it was mistakenly packed on Friday night.
So the moral of this story.....
Always gig with 2 Fenders................... one could easily pack up.
And if you gonna drink Stroh Rum........ put your guitar away first........ Easy
Lekker ..................
We're looking forward to some really festive months coming up
and hope that you can join us as we make the Blooz
thatta Yous cannot refuse.................... Pull Innnnnnnn!!!
Adios
See u at a Gig
